Space Mice Characters for Science Research Group

Transplant and Stem Cell Immunobiology (TSI) Lab

Being an illustrator is not only rewarding as you do what you are passionate about, but you have the opportunity to meet exceptional people. I worked closely on the astronaut mice with Sonja Schrepfer, MD, PhD Associate Professor of Surgery at UCSF.

I was invited to listen to the amazing Millie Hughes-Fulford, medical investigator, molecular biologist and former NASA astronaut who has completed several missions to the space.

Toto's Story, chapter book illustrations, cover and book design

"My Amazing Adventures with Dorothy in Oz" Chapter-book cover and illustrations for Steve Metzger award winning author's book.

Early spring time when Steve contacted me I did not suspect how much fun it would be to work with him. To bridge the East and West Coast (Steve lives in NYC, me in San Francisco Bay Area) we had a weekly meeting via Skype or phone. After several sketches and versions Dorothy and Toto, eventually we both were satisfied with the results and I started to work on the rest of the book. You can see almost all of the most important characters on the front and back covers in color. Inside the book each of 20 chapters got a sweet black and white illustration.

However curious and sometimes opinionated, Toto is always a loyal friend of Dorothy. Young readers will love Steve Metzger's humor sense and enjoy Toto and Dorothy's adventures.

Based on L. Frank Baum’s classic tale, Toto tells us what really happened when he and Dorothy made that magical journey to Oz. Read all about the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, and the Wicked Witch of the West…through Toto’s eyes.

"I have had the great pleasure of working with Susan Szecsi on a children’s book project for the past six months. Aside from being a brilliant artist and designer, Susan was an effective communicator and a tireless worker. Although I initiated this book project, it immediately became clear that she had adopted it as her own. Susan reacted to the many changes along the way with an easygoing grace and a delightful sense of humor. During our weekly Skype sessions, she was a pleasure with whom to communicate. I would describe her as responsible, conscientious, creative, and dedicated. And I highly recommend her."

Orthodontist book (English and Spanish) illustrations and book design

"GOPex, Good Oral Posture Exercises, Your guide to being healthier, growing stronger and having straighter teeth"

Client: GOPex

Non fiction children's picture book, 2015-2016, Published in English 2016 February and in Spanish in 2017 January.

At the beginning of 2015 Dr. Sandra Kahn orthodontist decided to put together a small booklet for her patients about an amazing new method that she was using. Sandra already knew me from previous personal projects and other medical books I prepared illustrations for her. Dr. Kahn collaborated with Dr. Simon Wong from Melbourne. The booklet started to grow and eventually became 40 pages, a colorfully illustrated non-fiction picture book, aiming children and parents who are intersted in practicing with GOPex.

I created almost all of the more than 35 illustrations, some of them are medical-anatomical, others are depicting exercises, sequences of exercises, charts, diagrams. We even used short comic strips to teach in an entertaining way.

"Working with Susan Szecsi has been the best experience in my professional life. She is incredibly talented, she understands exactly what I want to illustrate and she creates the perfect communication tool. She not only draws perfect medical anatomy but she makes it beautiful. She is a joy to work with, it's like having a magic wand to create exactly what I need. I would recommend her highly for any illustration or design project!" - Dr. Sandra Kahn D.D.D.S., M.S.D.

"Susan is the illustrator of our new book "Good Oral Posture Exercises". Without her imagination, visual flare and dedication to refinement upon refinement, our work would never have blossomed. Indeed a passionate artist!" - Dr. Simon Wong BDSc, FICCDE, DipLSFO.

Anatomic illustrations for book about the ergonomics of handknitting

"Dr Lani 's No-Nonsense Bone Health Guide" a best selling book about Osteoporosis

Project was finished in 2014, published by Hunter House Publishers, California

Under Dr Lani's supervision I worked for months creating and labeling the images. As the paper edition was printed in black and white, the images needed to look great and readable in grayscale too. The color versions are used at her webinars and presentations. We used reference images, photos, X-ray images from archives, they were often low resolution, so I relied a lot on Lani's description too.

"Susan was wonderful to work with. She provided the illustrations for my book, Dr. Lani's No-Nonsense Bone Health Guide. Many were difficult anatomical illustrations and she nailed them. She deeply cares about the quality of her work and made every effort to provide me with top notch illustrations. We worked via Skype, which was also very easy to facilitate, share screens and discuss the project. I highly recommend Susan. - "Dr. Lani Simpson, D.C., C.C.D.
